A typical object-verb activity might look something like this:
LESSON: Using sticky notes, post three to five nouns at various locations in the classroom. Visual imageryâmagazine pictures, stuffed animals, or stickersâmay be attached to the noun examples. Invite students to identify as many corresponding verbs as possible for each noun provided. For example, a clipping of a scientist excavating a fossil might generate: search (ing), dig, look, think, brush, walk, label, study, name, write/record, travel, talk, save/preserve, protect, carry, store. Allow students the opportunity to share their thoughts with other learners (Inside-Outside circles and acting out work wonderfully!). For example:
â¢Pencil: write, draw, twirl, tap, erase, break, sharpen, scribble, print, shade
â¢Computer: print, copy, type, search, download, play, edit, file, save
â¢Towel: wipe, dry, clean, mop, wring, wash, dry, hang, use, share, spread
Word Relays: Students work in teams of 3â6. Each team moves to a corner of the room. Place a pile of content/unit-specific words in the center of the room. Next to the content words, place a second pile of combined conjunctions, prepositions, punctuation marks, and âdouble underlineâ cards (to indicate use of capital letters). Single representatives from each team select one word and return to his or her âbase.â This process will continue until one of the teams successfully arranges collected words into a meaningful, correctly ordered sentence.
